Our own practice layout. It follows the Minnesota (MSHSL) scorekeeper and libero tracker instructions for NFHS volleyball, but it is not the NFHS scorebook, so use your school’s official book when you score for real.

    How the matches are made

Each six-letter code plays one invented match forward rally by rally: the serving team scores and keeps the serve, or the other team scores, rotates and serves (a side-out). Substitutions, time-outs and libero replacements happen in the dead balls between rallies and always follow the NFHS rules. The story, the scorebook, the libero tracking sheet and the answers all come from the same rallies, so they agree.

Levels: Points only is one set with no substitutions or libero. Subs adds substitutions and time-outs. Libero adds a libero on each team (her swaps with back-row players are libero replacements, not substitutions) and one improper server. Full match is best of three with every set to 25, as states that adopt the two-of-three format play it.

    Example: the first rallies

In match SCRE56 (Points only), Jaguars serve first: mark their X box. Jaguars #20 is on row 1. Jaguars win rallies 1 to 3: write 1 to 3 in the boxes on row 1 and slash them in the running score. Pumas win rally 4: write –| in the next box on Jaguars’ row 1, square point 1 in Pumas’ running score, and write 1 in a square in the first box of Pumas’ row 2, because #6 rotates in to serve rally 5. The recording conventions we follow

NFHS scorebook and libero tracking conventions, with the source for each
    1. Line-ups. Write the starting numbers on rows 1 to 6 in serve order. Mark the team serving first with an X. NFHS Instructions for Scorer; MSHSL
    2. Points on serve. Write the point number in the next box on the server’s row and slash it in the running score. MSHSL Scorekeeper Duties
    3. Loss of rally. Write –| in the server’s next box. Square the other team’s next point in its running score, and write that point, squared, in the next box on its next server’s row. MSHSL Scorekeeper Duties
    4. Substitutions. In the next box of the serving team’s current row: S in/out for the serving team, Sx in/out for the receiving team. Slash the number leaving on that team’s row and write the new one beside it; slash the next substitution number. 18 per set; a player always comes back in the same serve order position. MSHSL; NFHS 10-3-2, 10-3-3
    5. Time-outs. Score of the team taking it first (5-8) in its time-out box. Two per set. MSHSL; NFHS 1-2-3
    6. Libero. Circle the libero’s number at the top the first time she enters. She may serve in one serve order position per set: triangle that number, and triangle her points in the boxes and the running score. NFHS 2026-27 Interpretations Sit. 3; NFHS 10-4-5; MSHSL
    7. Improper server. Recorded as a normal loss of rally: –| on the row of the player who should have served, and a squared point for the other team. MSHSL Improper Server; NFHS 6-4 penalty
    8. Match. Best of three by state adoption: every set to 25, win by 2, no court change in the deciding set. The other team serves first in set 2; a new toss decides set 3. NFHS 1-2-1 note 1, 1-2-4, 8-2-4; PAVO 2026 comparison
    9. Libero tracking sheet. Starting players under SP. Libero in: write L after the number. Player back: write the number after the L. No slash for the libero. Substitution: slash the number leaving and write the new one. Triangle the Roman numeral where the libero served. NFHS Instructions for Libero Tracker; MSHSL

States differ in the details. Oklahoma’s instructions, for example, circle each served point and write R for a side-out; Illinois junior high circles points in the running score. We follow the Minnesota (MSHSL) Scorekeeper and Libero Tracker Instructions, revised in July 2026. We skip the roster, officials and captain boxes.

    Questions people ask

How do you keep a high school volleyball scorebook?

Write the starting numbers in serve order on rows 1 to 6. Each box on a row is one serve or action. When the serving team wins the rally, write the point number in the server’s next box and slash it in the running score. When it loses, write –| instead.

What do the squared numbers mean?

A squared point was won on the other team’s serve, a loss of rally. Square it in the running score and write it, squared, in the next box of the player who will now serve. Unsquared points were won on your own serve.

How do you record a substitution, S or Sx?

Write it in the next box of the serving team’s current row: S in/out if the serving team substitutes, Sx in/out if the receiving team does. Then slash the number leaving on that team’s row, write the new number beside it, and slash the next substitution number.

How does a libero tracking sheet work?

List the starting players under SP. When the libero replaces a player, write L after that number; when the player comes back, write the number after the L, a “libero sandwich” like 6 L 6. Substitutions are slashed and the new number written. If the libero serves, triangle that position’s Roman numeral.

How many substitutions and time-outs are allowed in high school volleyball?

18 substitutions per set, with unlimited entries as long as each player always comes back in the same serve order position. Each team has two time-outs per set, 60 seconds each. Libero replacements are not substitutions.

How do you record an improper server?

Tell the second referee at the first dead ball. It is a loss of rally: write –| on the row of the player who should have served, and the other team gets a squared point and the serve. If it is found before the other team serves, points the improper server scored are cancelled.
